New Spaces: Air Plants & Epiphytes series

Nature has been a source of lifelong inspiration in my artwork. Inspired by my current experience as an immigrant, I found a strong affinity to air plants in their rootlessness and ability to thrive as part of an overwhelmingly diverse environment.

BREEDING GROUNDS

This painting represents the first stage of entering a new environment, when its dynamism and richness are almost alienating. This is communicated by the distant perspective and repeating lines of branches, creating a separation between viewer and subject.

REALIZATION

This painting represents the second stage of adjusting to a new environment, when celebrating one’s individuality becomes a necessary pre-condition to joining the community. Without realizing the importance of your individuality, you cannot realize your value to the community.

Cornucopia

This painting represents the last stage of blending in the environment, in which individuals experience their collective existence as part of the community. The feeling of community is transmitted through a representation in black and white, indicating a level of sameness, while relying on the variety of shapes and textures to represent the individuality of each member in the community.
