CEDRO ROJO for Made from Scraps

These are botanical Illustration studies of a Western Red Cedar tree. For a week I visited a tree at Stanley Park, by Beaver Lake trail. I focused my studies on the bark, the needles, and the cones of the tree. I spent a lot of time observing the different patterns, colours and textures that are so unique to the Red Cedar tree. The frames that accompany these illustrations are wood circles made from offcuts of 80-year-old Red Cedar log – Crafted by Patrick Christie.

Made From Scraps brings artists and designers of all type together to find practical and creative uses for a featured “scrap” material. Artists participating in Made from Scraps: Volume 1 represent a variety of backgrounds and practices, and converge around a common material: wood. This series sparks a new conversation about sustainability, as the artists and designers innovate products and applications that provide practical solutions to design and objects of value, sentimentality, beauty, and longevity. As each volume progresses, the artists dive deeper into the subject matter together, creating an interconnectedness of community, shared learning and inspiration. The Crafted Vancouver event is the closing celebration of Made From Scraps: Volume 1, and features work that has been developed over the course of 8 months.

Volume 1 is about wood and inspired by Patrick’s late Mentor, Art Paul, who was an artist, innovator, and craftsman. Paul created mostly large-scale architectural timber projects using custom and modified metalworking machinery that produced work with precision and high-quality finish. His last major project before passing away in June 2017 was the structural elements of the Carcross/Tagish Learning Center in the Yukon. Many of the scraps used in the Made From Scraps: Volume 1 were offcuts from Paul’s projects
